Smart transport technology from Ajeevi

The next best thing to happen is smart city. Looking at it no one could underestimate the value it signifies, especially for India. In India the competitive landscape is developing and smart city is one direction on it. People know smart city concept is catching up, though they estimate they have very less to do with it. Government is to spend Rs 1,400 crores (US$ 226 million) over the next two years on incentives and subsidies for makers and buyers of electric vehicles as part of an effort to have at least six million electric vehicles on Indian roads by 2020. This is being made a reality and if there is government support and people accepting the changes, then smart city would happen.

There are plans to convert 101 river stretches to transport goods and passengers through cheaper and environment-friendly National Waterways. A thousand new barges would definitely provide gainful direct employment for 20,000 people. Delhi is all set to become the only first city in India to have installed intelligent traffic lighting systems. And that is not all.


The use of bio-fuels is being encouraged with an ethanol-blending program to curb India's oil imports. Indian road accidents have increased from 50 percent in the previous decade. India has to have more stricter norms to control vehicular pollution. Only when the smart city plans are successful in country can India get to global norms of pollution, numerous banking and other legislation. We can keep up with international competition, while providing best services and facilities for people.

Effective means to utilize smart transport fully




Smart transport systems for the metros and cities is been the main agenda of reforms in the country since past many years. The Government of India has envisaged the growth of smart cities and selected about 40 cities out of 100 for which smart city solutions would get enabling the introduction of the concept through viable projects.
More than a couple of smart transport systems are available to individuals and planners for smart transport system. The question about smart transport system is whether the system for support and backing of government in this sector is total and impartial. The agenda would need to focus on how best to employ devices, new transport, roads, and other modes for developing the ITS or Intelligent Transportation Systems.
City transport is an important sector of life of people. In most cities the road transport is key mode of commuting and logistics. The big and large cities have metro and local train network as the backbone of transportation mode. In order to fully incorporate ITS into the surface transportation network, ITS must be “mainstreamed” into the overall transportation planning and project development processes that exist in each state and metropolitan region of the country. Less equality, inadequate capacity, road safety, over crowdedness, poor traffic management, theft and lack of model solutions plague the road transport effectiveness and development. Smart transport systems would need better services, cities would need leading to huge demand and supply gap within poor infrastructure networks. There is under recovery with poor asset management for numerous cities.

Technology is important though the predictions of demand and supply cannot be fed automatically every time and for every city in exhaustive way. Visibility of routes information for travelers in hassle free journey is sometimes unavailable. Multi model analysis of the network of transport cannot emerge properly unless the system wide deficiencies can be rectified. Intelligent traffic management would aid efficient traffic. The balanced focus for improving or changing infrastructure into leveraging smart technology cannot become solutions unless the investing in initiatives becomes streamlined to smart city objectives. Creating high quality transport in smart cities is able to bring out approvals and citizen guarantee there has to be sufficient and reliable technology deployment, effective way to treating the same with observing the planned short or long breaks, and continuation of program or project objectives. Therefore the effect of limited resources and planning causes a deep drawback on project and insists on further weakening smart transport ability for meeting future goals.

Managing smart transport systems



Smart systems of transport have come up recently with government of India about to spend 1400 crs over next two years as incentives and subsidies for maker and buyer of electric vehicle. It intends to have 6mn electric vehicles by 2020 in India. There are big plans for converting river stretches to transport goods and passengers to cheaper national highways.
The use of intelligent traffic lighting systems, bio fuels and lessening road accidents would be the paradigm of development. Thereby there would be better visibility for urban transport systems and those surrounding these cities would get efficient traffic, timelier repairs, road safety and faster commutes. Reduction in fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions would lead to improvement in road transport. While in international cities there could be integrated technologies for urbanization, there are even better smart transport alternatives coming up in cities across India, Kigali, Rwanda and Tanzania.
There is possibility of mass transport systems from proprietary solutions making these in place for smart transport. Smart cities would develop advanced traffic management systems, cameras, message signs, detectors, websites and mobile apps to support. Remote access for monitoring and adjusting timing of traffic signals would be employed; also a system of planned road transport exigencies could be implemented like in Kenya called the UPLAN platform.

When the aim is for managing smart transport then the systems used across cities could be called the intelligent transport systems or ITS. These systems of transport management have been around for sometime though now they feature newer applications like traffic predictions, decision supports, advisory, ticketing and fare collections. Better sensors, radio frequency tags and global positioning systems can also be used in Smart Transport. Predicting traffic can help model planning for better continuous system wide performance track and strategies development. Three key aspects adhered to by ITS are governance, transport network optimization and integrated transport systems. Comparing global leading practices to benchmark ITS would validate and develop better implementation techniques or roadmap. As these systems of traffic management provide experience based learning and programs, it would be a challenge in India and can be addressed with integrated approach leveraging advanced technologies and intelligent solutions. Smart transport systems need to undertake viable options for sustenance and monitoring of progress. As this is quite vague there needs to be sufficient training and ground breaking for achieving target of smart transport. Such ITS technologies in collaboration could produce better outcome for smart transport.

Making most of smart transport systems



The transport system in India caters to population of 70 to 75% using public transport, cycling or walking. And the population in urban cities is also closer to 30% and expected to increase to 87% by year 2031. The transport reforms hint at utilizing technology resources, where urban transport fund, parking policy, advertisement policy and constitution of Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) are main ones. Only about a handful of cities from chosen 65 have been able to come up with at least one reform so far. That is why the smart transport systems in the country can produce reforms and provide the impetus to enabling better efficient and effective transport network.
Smart transport systems include increasing number of surveillance of transport systems, better efficiency in fuel usage and increasing the throughput of resources utilized. Such a network is able to reap efficiencies of the system within cities and innovate better management of public transport projects. At the level of cities the smart transport can be funded by either state or center therefore the onus of providing for better reforms and faster implementation should become channeled, smooth, rigorous and comprehensive in details. Smart transport systems that have been implemented in other cities of world like Stockholm, Amsterdam etc. have yielded a greater safety, high utilization efficiency, higher fuel efficiency and better management of transport. This way the cities were able to mandate a lower difficulty level in sanctioning and providing salaries, deploying, operations, sales and marketing in the projects for smart transport.   
With the inclusion of the stand on comprehensive city governance reforms, India will not deteriorate any further. There would be cohesion between the various agencies responsible for urban development and planning. Every urban plan will have a long-term view for smart transport which also pre assesses given flyovers and high investment mass transit projects with no proper feeder services, high accident rates and risk to health through increasing air pollution. With the introduction of a Smart transport as part of smart cities, 100 smart cities and 500 cities in India will be rejuvenated and transformed with an allocation of close to Rs 1 lakh crore, for a period of five years. This plan is the biggest one so far for transport systems progress and city development and as part of Smart city the aim is also to better city governance and international quality levels of life for citizens.
